This winter costs to heat our homes are going to soar. MSN Money offers some timely tips to save us a bit of money.

I find that a programmable thermostat, weather stripping, changing air filters regularly and caulking to be the most effective.

Fortunately, the heat from the other apartments in our building (below me or next to me, I’m not sure) is enough to keep our apartment toasty (sometimes too toasty). I noticed this because on cold days the temperature in the apartment would go up, whereas on cold days, it went down, even though we hadn’t even turned on our thermostat. It doesn’t seem to make sense, but that’s the best explanation I could come up with.

Well that’s my tip: try to find an apartment building where the neighbours will subsidize your heating costs.

BTW, there was a great SNL skit about caulking last weekend, which you reminded me of…
