Hey CC! Thanks for the mention. I've become a little obsessed with fuel prices since getting injured. I'm unable to ride my bike to work so my wallet is getting lean while my butt is getting fat. Sigh.

I've lived Ellen Roseman's article on the travel fees for years, it's old news. But the part that I didn't know is the law that was passed that said that airlines must advertise their "all-in" prices. I wonder why the industry doesn't practise that?

For me, I've gotten used to having to pay about $500 for a "free" flight using points and I also automatically assume that the "all-in" price of any plane ticket that I purchase is roughly going to be double the advertised "sticker price".

Always appreciate the linkback :)

About gas.. I always thought that it defeats the purpose to drive out of the way to a gas station that offers cheaper gas station especially when there's a huge lineup!

One of these days I should do some type of calculation to quantify what ends up being cheaper.

I hope that ING (or someone else) creates a fully automated way of maximizing the benefit of the tax-free savings accounts. For example, I want just 1 account at ING, but below the covers it is really 2 - a normal savings account, and a tax-free savings account. If I withdraw money, I don't want to have to deposit it back into some other account and then wait until next year and remember to transfer it.

It would be a lot easier if the rule was just that the first $5000 you put into a savings account was collecting interest tax-free. Then the account could go up and down all year without needing to worry about regaining headroom and tracking it until the next tax year!

It's also a good idea to keep a mileage log for your vehicle when trying out different gas stations. Ultramar/Husky/Mowhawk use up to 10% ethanol, and when I use this gas I get 8-10% lower mileage. So even though the corner Husky station has the lowest prices, it ends up costing me more in the long run.

TonyR: I'm not sure if there is a gas co-op in the Ottawa area near where I live and work. If there is, it sounds like a great idea.

Funny that Ultramar has some of the cheapest prices around these parts( Ottawa). Funny, because they were one of the culprits in the recent price fixing charges in Quebec.

For gas, look for a co-op. My rebate last year was about $0.10 per litre.
