Fraud Prevention Month
I read in the papers today that March has been designated as fraud prevention month. Here are the steps I take to prevent fraud in general and identity theft in particular:
- Shredding all credit card receipts, debit card receipts or personal documents.
- Not carrying my SIN card in my wallet.
- Not giving out my SIN number unless it is absolutely essential.
- Not storing my passwords or PINs on my computer.
- Not clicking on any links in an email from my “bank” asking me to log in. (The CBC did a story recently about phishing).
- Once every year, requesting a credit report from Equifax and TransUnion.
Did I miss anything?

Thanks for reminding me… I try to order my credit report every March 15th.
Sean
I tried to order my credit report from Equifax last year, and they returned it saying the forms were filled out incorrectly. Since, then I have read that the credit report companies have been running a scam to discourage consumers from obtaining free reports by mail, to promote their fee-based online products. Have you experienced this and know of a workaround?
Manisha: I’ve been ordering credit reports for years and I’ve never had a problem.
