I read in the papers today that March has been designated as fraud prevention month. Here are the steps I take to prevent fraud in general and identity theft in particular:

  1. Shredding all credit card receipts, debit card receipts or personal documents.
  2. Not carrying my SIN card in my wallet.
  3. Not giving out my SIN number unless it is absolutely essential.
  4. Not storing my passwords or PINs on my computer.
  5. Not clicking on any links in an email from my “bank” asking me to log in. (The CBC did a story recently about phishing).
  6. Once every year, requesting a credit report from Equifax and TransUnion.

Did I miss anything?
