Canadian Stocks in Google Finance
Getting information on Canadian stocks on Google Finance…
Google has unveiled a new Finance site and many bloggers have reviewed it already. In my opinion, despite some cool features, unlike some Google freebies like Picasa, Google Earth or Blogger, it is hard to get excited about another me-too site. I have all my portfolio information set up in Yahoo! Finance already, so why would I want to use Google Finance? ? In any event, Yahoo! is probably scrambling to catch-up to some of the new features.
Note that Canadian stock information can be obtained by suffixing “TSE:” to the ticker symbol. For example, type “TSE:TD” for TD Bank, “TSE:BBD.SV.B” for Bombardier and “TSE:YLO.UN” for Yellow Pages. Unlike Yahoo! Finance, Google does provide more information for Canadian equities like financial data and company profile and stock charts are available for every stock that I checked.

I tried to take a look at Google Finance (I also have my information in Yahoo Finance) but I don’t have a Google account and I didn’t have the time or desire to set one up. One question I have is does Google Finance have dividend information for Canadian stocks? If they do (Yahoo doesn’t at least for the stocks that I have looked at like RY, BMO, CLD.A, BNS, L) that would be some pretty good motivation for me to take a hard look at moving from Yahoo to Google.
I just did a little more playing around with Google and it turns out you don’t need an account to look at things. I have to say I am pretty impressed and I really hope this gets Yahoo motivated to make some changes.
At a first glance I couldn’t find dividend information on any stocks, let alone Canadian stocks.
I just tried to set up a portfolio and all I get is a “we will support international equities soon” warning.
What is the point of making Caniadian data available abut not allowing a simple portfolio to be set up with Canadian stocks.
I would think with all the bags of cash Google is taking in these days they could launch something that is reasonably set up to do things.
I’m also dissapointed that you can’t get data over five years old. I want ten year charts darn it!
Do note the little tag indicating “beta”. They’re not finished yet.

Tom: Good point. But you can bet that Yahoo! is trying to match all the new cool features (kinda like they matched the 1GB email box when GMail was announced).
James: Thanks for pointing it out. I didn’t try to set up a portfolio. And 10-year charts and dividend information would be nice. But Yahoo! only has 5-day charts for many securities, so Google is an improvement!
Anyone know how to get an ETF like XIU? I tried tsx:xiu but it doesn’t work.
What about mutual funds?
BTW, how is yahoo’s support for Canadian mutual funds? Last time I checked they didn’t support them.
TSE: XIU or TSX: XIU is not working. Looks like they have some bugs to iron out.
One of the features I like is that you can look at a price chart and there are links along the chart that you can click on to get info on the news event that occurred at that time. Lets you see what happened where you see sudden drops/climbs on a price chart.
Hey Oxcc…
If you want dividend information for those CDN Stocks (RY BMO BNS etc…) you can go to Yahoo’s CDN site http://www.yahoo.com and go to the Finance Page and type in RY and it shows the Dividend and Yield…
In the above post… I meant http://www.yahoo.ca
Matt: Thanks for pointing it out. I find it silly that yahoo.ca shows dividend information but yahoo.com shows N/A. C’mon Yahoo! Surely this can be fixed.
