Money Tip: Buy Used on Kijiji

July 11th, 2007 · 7 Comments

Kijiji is a free local classified site that you can use to buy or sell almost any used item you can think of. Posting a sell ad is really easy: you select the category to list your item, enter a title, how much you are asking for the item, a short description and your email address (you may want to get a free email address just for this purpose). Optionally, you can provide your address (without the street number) to help sellers locate your area and images of the item you are selling.

Buying on Kijiji is equally simple: you send an email to the poster using the contact form in the ad. You agree on a price and a date and time to pick up the item.

I’ve used the site to buy some toys for the kids. For example, I picked up a Little Tikes Coupe car for $20 and similar items are retailing for about $70. I found that prices are a bit higher than garage sales but much cheaper than buying new. Unlike garage sales, you can search for and buy exactly what you are looking for. You also have to drive around to pick the item but you can easily combine the pick-up with your usual errands.

How does it compare to Craig’s List?

FP - It depends on where you live and how many people use it. Go to http://www.kijiji.ca and find your city to see if there’s a community around it.

Another site I like (aside from craigslist) is usededmonton.com (they have usedxxx.com sites for most major cities in Canada and some in the US). Very similar to kijiji, and another good place to pick up good deals.

On the flip side, both sites are good to sell your old stuff. I don’t know if I’d ever do a physical garage sale again - I’d rather see what people are interested in on the net and then junk the rest that doesn’t sell in a month or two.

    Thanks Investoid.

I rather like doing garage sales and some of the crap I’ve sold, I wouldn’t try to sell anywhere else :)

Mike: I found Craig’s List to have way less items than Kijiji, at least for the Ottawa area.

Like Investoid, I am going to clear out some of the old stuff. I don’t like to hold garage sales :)

I still opt for CraigsList as well. But if you invest in eBay, then definitely use Kijiji, since they are the owners.

I have a big box of books I’m planning to try to sell (trying to find a program that’ll easily let me put in ISBN #’s and get formatted author/title info). My plan is to try Craigslist (maybe kijiji) and dabble with amazon’s book service and Ebay (I’ve had an account for YEARS but haven’t really used it). I hate how clutter clutters up your life :-).
