This week will mark the second anniversary of launching this humble blog. The blog has come a long way since its launch: more than 500 posts, nearly 1800 comments, over 88,000 visitors and a few mentions in the national press.
I would like to sincerely thank my readers for their comments, kind words via email and for just stopping by. Shameless plug alert! If you wouldn’t mind, I would appreciate it if you would tell your friends to stop by. Thanks for your support.
In appreciation, I am giving away two hardcover copies of the excellent book, A Random Walk Down Wall Street. In my opinion, it is one the best books on investing and would be a nice addition to your bookshelf. To enter, just leave a comment to this post and don’t forget to include your email address (not displayed). There are just a few simple rules:
- Deadline for entries is 8 p.m. EDT on Thursday, November 23, 2006.
- One entry per person.
- Canadian mailing addresses only.
- Your privacy is very important to me and your email address will be used for the sole purpose of contacting you if you happen to win.
- I’ll pick two names at random and announce the winner after the deadline.
Thanks once again and good luck!

Great work and good, reliable and practical advice. In particular, your advice on the couch potato portfolio is excellent. It fits well with the comments made by John Bogle, of Vanguard Funds, when he did the introduction to a recent republishing of the original text of the “Intelligent Investor” by Ben Graham. Bogle noted that everyone remembers how Graham spoke of how to pick stocks and of his approach in terms of finding value and a margin of safety etc. What no-one remembers is that he said most investors shouldn’t even try! He (Grahem) made the point that to achieve average returns is much easier than one thinks, and to exceed average returns is much harder than one thinks. To achieve average (and good) return one need only buy a solid diversified basket of stocks - like an index. Yet to try to reach for an homerun by moving out of the indexing concept means high risk and for the average small individual investor, high potential for sub-par returns. His book, the “Intelligent Investor” which spoke of two kinds of investors, and what he called defensive ones, who should just get some advice and pick an index-like spread of stocks, almost never speaks to this point. So your emphasis on use of ETFs to save on fees and create a diversified portfolio, is solid advice. Well done.
As a stock picker who likes to add some fun to the portfolio with a little ‘explore’ added to the ‘core’ through a few individual equities, your blog serves to help keep me reminded of Graham’s good advice!

Congrats on 2 years. I’ve only been reading for the last few months, but you are at a similar stage in life (small children) and you are Canadian which makes almost all of your posts relevant.

Congratulations on your 2-year journey. I wish I had started reading your blogs as early as then. For me, it’s only been about a 1/2 year & I have enjoyed everyone of them.
I receive them in my email every morning and it is the first one I read for the day. You give such good, and practical advice: the idea to check the credit bureaus, the advice for etrade and TDWaterhouse discount brokerages, the new child tax credit…..I could go on. I have saved a number for future reference and sent many on to family & friends.
I really hope that you will continue providing these blogs. They are true-value added. No matter how much we know about finances and monetary issues, it’s hard to stay on top of everything. You point out what’s important to know on a timely basis!
Keep up the great work!
