Weekend Wall Street Journal

July 3rd, 2005 · No Comments

The Sunday Journal section of The Wall Street Journal is once again filled with interesting and informative columns:

  1. Jeff Opdyke writes about finding out how much he will need in retirement. For us, retirement is more than three decades away and it is extremely difficult to estimate how much we will need that far into the future. All we can do now is save as much as possible.
  2. Jonathan Clements suggests that while we may be in a low-return environment, investment costs (index mutual funds and ETFs) and taxes have also gone down sharply. These recent phenomena allow investors to keep more of their gains.
  3. Paul Farrell recommends that rebalancing a portfolio once every year is more than enough. For people in their asset-accumulation years (like me), rebalancing can be done with just the new money that is being added to the portfolio.
  4. Not all dividends are created equal. Often times, a hefty dividend is symptomatic of the high risk in a security. So, investors should be choosy with dividends.
