A Canadian Personal Finance Weblog

Terry Fox

I usually think and write about mundane money matters, but today I want to write about the incredible spirit of Terry Fox who, 25 years ago, ran his Marathon of Hope. The Royal Canadian Mint is honouring Terry Fox with a one dollar coin, so maybe this post will count as a personal finance item!

There are many excellent resources on Terry available on the web, like this CBC nomination for The Greatest Canadian. Every runner knows how much training, dedication and discipline it takes to run a regular marathon of 26 miles. I can’t even begin to imagine the sheer will, that propels a cancer patient with a prosthetic leg to dream of running across this huge nation to raise money for cancer research. Terry managed to run 3,339 miles before his dream was cut short by cancer spreading to his lungs.

During his lifetime, Terry’s Marathon of Hope raised more than $24 million for cancer research. Today, the Terry Fox Run is held in more than 50 countries and the Terry Fox Foundation has raised more than $350 million for the fight against cancer. I find the Terry Fox story deeply moving and very inspiring.

Wait, you’re not just obsessed with money?
